Zeche Zollverein

World-Class Industrial Monument

It was the largest coal mine in the world and was considered a technical masterpiece: the Zollverein colliery in Essen. Today, it is one of the most spectacular industrial monuments and enjoys the reputation of being the most beautiful colliery in Europe.

Built in the Bauhaus style, the Zeche Zollverein was the last colliery in Essen to be shut down in 1986. Since then, the site has been transformed into a flourishing cultural landscape. The clear cubic forms and the combination of functionality and aesthetics make the colliery a world-class industrial monument.

Guided tours of the industrial site are offered on various topics and at different times of day. There is something for everyone, from industrial history tours, and tours with former miners, to night tours of the illuminated site. But even without a guided tour, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is an experience.
