The Wood Artist Winfried Eichen
One man’s midlife crisis has led to an extraordinary art form. Winfried Eichen has been making wooden sculptures in his workshop for twelve years. Often inspired by personal crises, he creates work with its own charm from scraps of wood: not always perfect, but always individual and unique.
In contrast to iron, Winfried Eichen finds wood a softer, easier material to work with, which gives him more scope for creativity. About 12 years ago, he decided to rent a carpenter’s workshop in order to have enough space for his artistic development.
Around the age of 50, something touched Eichen’s heart when he was experiencing a severe midlife crisis and searching for answers to pressing questions. As thinking and taking notes did not help, he carved a heart out of wood for himself. This work developed into his profession – and his vocation.
